What a Steak Night :The Harp Pub

Steak

Lately, I have been on a tangent in which I just want a good ole delicious and “nutritious” steak. There are plenty steak restaurants all over Houston, but finding the right one can be hit or miss. This is especially true for steaks that varies in quality, price, flavor, beef cut (s) and cooking method. I usually prefer a nice New York Strip, grilled on a very hot grill, to a medium temperature with a little bit of butter on top. The Houston steak night website gives a great summary of most of the steak nights in and around town. One of the best features of the website is that they have a rating system for each one of those steak nights at those restaurants. You should definitely be able to drill down to the right choice. I usually find the spot I want to go to and then check Google, the Houston Press reviews, Eater Houston, and Yelp.com for additional assurance of my choice.

This leads me to the Harp Pub steak night. The Harp is located in the Montrose area off Richmond Ave and Montrose. 90 percent of time is just a pub bar, but on Mondays and Thursdays it has a hell of steak night that is lead by Chef Bryan Hawes. He was the old chef who provided steak nights for 55 Restaurant and Bar in the Rice Village area. People, when I tell you this is one great steak night that has loads of varieties and combinations, it will be true to every word.

Unfortunately, the Harp is closing Feb 2018. But on a positive note Chef Hawes has multiple locations where you can sample his grilling deliciousness. Check the link at the end for more information.

This is Steak Heaven

I found out about their steak night one day and fell in love with the options that rivals other restaurants steak nights. Most places lock you into the typical steak, baked/mashed potatoes and maybe some vegetables type of meal. But the Harp has so many more combinations such as rib-eyes, pork chops and lamb chops, and sausages that can be complimented with garlic mashed potatoes or a pasta salad. Oh… And you don’t have to order just one thing at a time. They all have a variety of names to represent the combination of food you can get from their menu.

For example, you can order a rib-eye steak with a nice grilled pork chop. Or you can get a pork chop and a half of rack of lamb. Or you can get all of them at once! I definitely recommend the combo meals if you’re on a date night and your significant other loves to share and eat off your plate. When you want multiple items on the menu, they call them Fatboys. I did have a picture of the menu, but its too blurry for my liking to show you guys. So here is the list of mouthwatering combinations:

Steak Fatboy – A 12.oz Rib-eye with a grilled pork chop.

Steak Fatboy

The Big Fatboy – A 12.oz Ribeye with a half a rack of lamb.

Unfortunately, I haven’t ordered this combination… Yet!

The Lamb Fatboy – A half of rack of lamb with a grilled pork chop (sausage added)

Lamb fatboy

The Lard Ass – A 12.oz Ribeye…. Anndddd a half a rack of lamb… Annddd a pork chop

My favorite Fatboy combo is the Steak Fatboy and it comes with 12.oz Rib-eye steak, a grilled pork chop and I always like to add one grilled jalapeno sausage link to make it the perfect steak dinner in my opinion. They should call it the Lard Ass Junior.

About the Chef

Chef Hawes put what he calls “Meat Mojo” as a seasoning on the food that he grills on steak nights. It’s so flavorful on each and every bite. The meals also comes with dipping sauces that varies in sweetness and spiciness that he has created to compliment the meals. I suggest trying all of them at once.

You can check out his website here.

You will also find his seasonings he uses and his locations for other steaks nights

The Perfect Date Night : Foodie Edition

A good foodie typically has a multitude of food places they would love to visit in their area. Mostly, places that have good prices, customer service, ambience, location and most importantly good food to match. In this case, this is MY version of a perfect date night for foodies. Most people go for reasonably priced food, but I wanted to show the the broad range of places from $$$$ to $. Of course all of these things can be mix-matched and utilized for a lot more than just a date night. A perfect date also means you need the perfect significant other to join you. Hopefully they’re not a picky eater, but if they are, make sure you choose a place with plenty options. Options is the keyword in defining the “perfect” date night.

Now lets get into the best parts!

Movietime!

Going to the movies is the best way to snuggle up with a love one and enjoy a temporary care free life away from the real world for a couple hours. The average movie theater are set up as large theaters made for large crowds, basic food options with people who can be typically in an awkward place sitting next to a complete stranger. As of late, movies theaters have moved towards being the jack-of-all trades of date nights. They’ve are added better food and drink options, better sitting arrangements that are more personal and comfortable and they’ve also have added waiters to serve you directly in your seat, so that you don’t have to walk a single step to get get any of your food and drink items.

Here are a couple of my choices for movie theaters.

Show off!

Comfortable seats!

Ipic theater ($$$$) has some the best qualities for the best movie experience possible. You will have your own two seats that is walled off from other the movie goers. You have blankets if its too cold in the theatre, a small pillow to get extra comfortable and an electronically controlled reclining chair. Their (menu) is full of “Luxury” food options such as a Wagyu Beast burgers, lobster rolls or loaded tater tots. They have a full restaurant and bars outside the theatre to relax and socialize before and/or after the movie. Of course all of these amenities come with a price. But it worth it in my opinion when you just want to have a great time!

But you just want to spend time together… Here’s a cheaper option.

Movies
Comfortable but not so private

If you not into that kind of stuff just yet. Then I definitely recommend going to Studio Movie grill ($$). It’s the same concept but the seating is not as personal and as comfortable. But you can surely get the same customer service experience throughout your movie going experience.

My Favorite part : Food

For the perfect date night, you need to have the perfect steak dinner. Steak is a staple of deliciousness that I like to experience once a week if I could. But my responsibility alarm will go off and will make sure it keeps me in line with what I want to buy. Steaks should barely touched other than the heat of the grill and mild seasoning, a minimum amount of sauces, cooked no further than medium well. After medium-well, it loses its flavor and texture. once you find the sweet spot, the flavor will surprise you!

Keeping showing off!

My pick for food is Capital Grille ($$$$)

But first you have to start off with a great appetizer that compliments the perfect date, that also prepares your palette for the rest of the nights food offerings.

seafood
Nice Appetizer!

I recommend the fried calamari or the lobster and crab cakes!

Next up.The main courses.

Steak is so good!
Yes!!

This is Capital Grille’s encrusted coffee NY strip with shallot butter sauce with sauteed spinach and lobster mac and cheese. $$$$

Going for a little cheaper…

Try Taste of Texas ($$$)

NY Strip steak with garlic butter. 🙂

Just want to spend time with your date?

Try a regular steak night in Houston . I regularly use this (site) to find what I need for steak nights around Houston.  But you have to remember to time your meals with your movietime. I would suggest eating after the movies, because who wants to watch a movie after a huge meal? This also means going a littler early to the movies because most steak nights end early depending on the day.  Pricing, seating and location are all up to you in terms of what you and special need to have a good time.

With all these steaks, you have to have the perfect sides  to enjoy them.

Lobster Mac and Cheese

Lobster Mac and cheese is must. Sauteed spinach with garlic helps with digestion and the perception of eating”healthy”. lol

Not really a meat eater or just don’t feel like eating beef? Go to Pappadeaux’s.

Blackened Catfish

Try Pappadeaux’s ($$) Mississippi Catfish Opelousas (good luck pronouncing that word)  which is blackened catfish with oysters, shrimp, and crabmeat in a delicious lemon garlic butter sauce. This is all served over a delicious dirty rice.

Closing out the perfect date : The Dessert

At this point, you’ve seen a movie, ate really well and probably had a few adult beverages in-between. But you and your date have a sweet tooth.

You’ve may have already visited one steakhouse, but Pappas Bros Steakhouse offers great steaks and also great desserts.

This dessert is a milk chocolate mousse with a toasted marshmallow with dark chocolate ganache, toffee pieces & vanilla-malt sauce.

Ice cream is good too!

If you want something different and customizable then I would chose Creamistry ($$). Creamistry uses liquid nitrogen to create your custom mix of ice cream flavors and choices in a matter of seconds. It’s really cool in terms of presentation and flavor choices.

The perfect date is relative to the people who are enjoying the night out. These are just my recommendations of course. You can use as many permutations of this list as possible that will result in your own “perfect” night.  This can also be a great idea when you may want to pop ” the question” one day !  When you have the right one, you probably have a perfect date on every date anyways!

Until next time my friends!. Don’t forget to visit my Instagram and Facebook page for more food porn!

Stay hungry!
