BossCat Libations. The love of food and brunch.

You’re taking your usual stroll through Yelp looking for a new spot to entice your palate. When you’re a foodie, you’ve tried a thousands places before and you need something new. You almost gave up but then you notice a name that makes your eyes light up. It’s Bosscat Kitchen + Libations. From the pictures alone, you just knew you had to try this place out. And that was my story on how I ended up going to them several times in a single month. From brunch to dinner, Bosscat will give you everything that you need to have a great dining experience.

Now lets get into the great food, drinks and the joys of good food.

Fried egg and the rest…

burger
Bosscat Burger

I have a close relationship with fried eggs. If the option is on the menu, I will pay the up-charge to have it. This is where I introduce the Bosscat burger, that’s made with in-house ground beef, bacon, cheese and black garlic sauce. Juicy, large as hell and flavorful are the first thoughts that come to mind. But no burger is complete without the fries. The Bosscat fries takes two days to prepare and the recipe is a secret, but they are delicious nevertheless.

Bosscat Sticky Bun burger
Bosscat Sticky Bun burger

Another burger they serve is strictly for the brunch crowd. The Sticky Bun Breakfast burger is made with a sticky bun with sliced smoked ham,in- house ground beef, cheese, duck fat fried egg and pecans on top. You’re thinking to yourself, why in the world would I get this burger?  Well, on the top of their menu their brunch motto says “…because calories don’t count on Sundays”. It’s one whole breakfast in a neat package.

Canadians love cheese too…

egg pountine
Bosscat Poutine

Poutine is a Canadian staple that has been around for the last 60 years. To be considered a poutine, it must have these three delicious ingredients : cheese curds, french fries and gravy. Everything else is just an extra level of enjoyment. Bosscat has  some really good poutine and it’s shareable, it’s fulling, it’s nap inducing and it’s everything.  The Bosscat Poutine is made with their homemade Bosscat fries, pork belly, Ellsworth Creamery cheese curds, and Andouille sausage gravy. Make sure you grab yourself a nice whiskey or cocktail or both. It doesn’t matter at this point, you will be full and sleepy before the drinks comes to the table after eating this meal anyways.

frog leg
Nashville hot frog legs

Have you ever wanted to go to Nashville and have hot frog legs? You’re in luck! Bosscat has what you need! The Nashville Hot Frog Legs are buttermilk battered frog legs, that’s tossed in a Nashville hot sauce and served on a piece of white bread to soak the juices for you. This was a great appetizer that I refused to share with anyone who asked.

Beef and chicken and potatoes… Am I on a farm?

Beef
Braised Beef short rib

I was lucky the first time I visited Bosscat. The owners were very generous with their time in describing their food on the menu. You can tell that they’ve tasted everything on the menu. This wonderful suggestion by J.T. was one of my favorites. The 12 hour Braised Beef Short Rib that is made with Midwest braised beef short rib, in a black pepper sauce, potato gratin and topped with another fried egg! Sorry for the picture. I was too excited to eat!

For the love of Brunch…

Brunch
Fruity Pebble French Toast

The Fruity Pebble French Toast. The creativity of this meal gives it a 12 on a scale of 1-10.  The bread that was used was perfect. It soaked up the flavors but didn’t get soggy whatsoever. I literally ate half, shared some later, took it home and ate it for breakfast the next day!  Their french toast is infused with condensed milk glaze, chopped bacon, fruity pebbles and fresh berries. Its only on brunch!  🙁 And its very popular. And you might see me there eating it again.

Another favorite of mine…

breakfast brunch
Everything breakfast!

Another candidate for meal of the year goes to the Short Rib Chilaquiles. It’s made with shredded beef short rib, over corn tortillas, cheese, sliced avocado and topped off with a fried egg and sour cream! This was so fulling. You can definitely skip dinner with this combination. It sticks to your bones and doesn’t let go until you wake up again.

Overall, Bosscat has some really good food. The atmosphere is incredible. They have the glass garage doors that open to let sunlight and fresh air in, and you have the vibe of California throughout the restaurant. It makes sense, because there is another Bosscat in Newport, California. The Houston food scene is getting very robust and its getting harder to differentiate yourself from one restaurant to another. But Bosscat had definitely separated themselves from everyone else with their food, atmosphere, drinks and prices. They’ve only been open for a few weeks and they have already made a significant impact to the food scene.

Go check them out!

Wooster’s Garden. The Premier bar of Houston.

Wooster's Handcrafted

I was introduced to Wooster’s by a surprised birthday party for a friend. And I have been once a week, every week for two consecutive months! Wooster’s is the type of place that when you walk in, you’re glad you didn’t go straight home type of place. This place makes a plethora of drinks that are handcrafted to the delight of the customer and their specific flavors and palette. The ambience is something straight out of store front. But one of the biggest draw I have to this place is the daily happy hour specials. Two hours of drinking bliss is all you will have while sitting in this place. I usually leave the spirit blogging to my buddies at The Libation Guild. But I was so impressed by Wooster’s, that I had to let the masses know about this place.

Let’s Drink!

Wooster's Island Hopper
Wooster’s Island Hopper

First drink on this list is the Island Hopper. This drink is vibrant combination of Rum, Clement Coconut, “Rabbits” blood and bitters. As you can see from the pictures, the drink is the perfect hue for picture taking. It’s almost too perfect to drink. From the fuschia color (I had help with this) to the flaming lime as a garnish!

Sex in the boiler Room
Sex in the boiler Room

The next drink I tried was the Sex in the Boiler Room. With subtle hints of mellow creme type of dessert, this drink will make you order two at a time. It has Bourbon, St. Arnold Boiler room beer, lemon, peach cordial and vanilla benedictine tincture. (If some of the ingredients seem foreign, dont worry, the bartenders love to explain their craft in detail). One my favorite things about their drinks, is how nothing is sitting in a big pre-made jug, awaiting to be poured in your glass. Their cocktails are hand made 100 percent of time.

Wooster's - Muscle Relaxer
Wooster’s – Muscle Relaxer

The next drink and possibly my favorite drink, is the Muscle relaxer. This drink is served in a highball glass with Cachaca, Jamaican rum, muddled kiwi, lime and Jamaican bitters. This is the type of drink that you order just once and then sit back and relax for a while. Most of Wooster’s drinks will get you “there” in very pleasant way.

Wooster's - Five o'clock shadow
Wooster’s – Five o’clock shadow

The Five O’clock shadow was the first drink I have ever tried at Wooster’s. The first drink that made me say “wow”. The first drink that made me think, ” this is the smoothest drink I have had in awhile”.

Do you see that ice cube? And I mean it’s really cubed! It has Bourbon, Rye, Cynar,Cocchi tornino, orange bitters, angostura and finished with a flamed orange zest.

Food + Wooster’s = No need to leave.

Like most establishments that have good things about them, there’s always a weak spot. Well, I can’t say that for Wooster’s! Their food selection pairs perfectly with every single solitary type of drink they serve to the public. I am burger aficionado, no matter where I am at, I will look for a burger first on the menu. Since I wasn’t planning on having such a broad range of drinks over a 6 week span, I needed to have something to soak up my alcohol intake. I went ahead and ordered their cheeseburger as good burger lover would do.

Woosters - Cheeseburger
Wooster’s – Cheeseburger

The Wooster’s cheeseburger is a grilled burger, served with redneck cheddar, Texas dressing, tomatoes and lettuce. And for two dollars more, you can get their herbed and battered french fries. The burger was served hot, perfectly cooked to a  “medium well” and is very plentiful for satisfying two huge appetites. Their fries have a subtle but flavorful buttery taste to them.

Beers + friends = Leisure time at its best

I didn’t want to leave this part out of my review. But Wooster’s has a great beer selection that I have been meaning to try every week I have came to visit. Once again, this is where the bartender shines. They know their liquors and their beers as well. When I try a new place, I tend to try the menu strategically. Right now, I am only concentrating on the their great cocktails. Then I am going to flip the menu over and go for their beers. I can’t wait! I will keep you guys updated.

Overall, the love of food and spirits will always draw me to places like Wooster’s. One of the best parts  about Wooster’s, is how comfortable the atmosphere is to everyone. The bartenders at Wooster’s are friendly and never slack up or cut corners to make a complete drink for their customers. The drinks have precision and accuracy across the board in terms of flavors and presentation. If you want to bring friends and have a happy hour or have a birthday party, or just don’t want to go home, this is definitely the place to consider sitting in traffic.

By the way… Happy Hour is 7 days a week. It’s 4-6p except on Sundays where it begins a little early. 2-4p.

Here is their incredible menu. Oh… Their cocktail menu changes seasonally as well. The bartenders make their own respective cocktail and have it added to the menu.

Lobster with a touch nostalgia from home…

Lobster Lobster More Lobster

Any one who has moved from their respective hometown will always has a few places of they will miss visited from home. It can be their actual home they grew up in or philly cheesesteak place across street from their old high school.  In this type scenario I would like to introduction Buddy, an entrepreneur who moved from Maine to Louisiana to pursue his career in education. His also met his future wife and business partner. The nostalgia of missing food from several places from home inspired him to move to Houston and start a sandwich business. Specifically with the simple flavors of North eastern America. This is where we introduce Mainly Sandwiches. A local eatery who specializes in Lobster rolls. The keywords for this type of food establishment is; fresh, prepared perfectly and consistent. Consistency has always been my main pet peeve from local restaurants. And you know what? I didn’t have that problem at all!

Let’s get into the food.

Lobster
Great spread!

Walking into the place, you will notice the theme of a northeastern pier and the fishermen bringing in the fresh lobster catch of the day.  It took me a while to decide on what type of sandwich I wanted try. My usual plan is to get multiple items on the menu for blogging and my own personal enjoyment. :). But I settled or should I say I was focus on getting something that was full of lobster. So I ordered the regular lobster roll with a side of fries. The service? Quick! The lobster roll? Tasty. Wanting more Lobster later? Yes!!!. The lobster was perfectly cooked and was never frozen, so you know its super fresh.

Lobster Euphoria Completed!

Soda
Moxie Cola

After finishing the whole roll and needing a nap, I was jokingly speaking to my fellow blogger Mark of The Flight Tasting about a drink I notice that was everywhere throughout the restaurant called Moxie. I am very aware of the word “moxie” but not the drink itself. During this discussion, a gentlemen behind counter shouted ” would like to try it?” . We both agreed to try it, because… well… it’s something new to try! Moxie can be described as a mixture of coke, root beer and a touch of cough syrup. The carbonation level is on par with Coca Cola , which was super helpful in breaking down that whole Lobster roll. Back to the gentlemen behind the counter.  Well I found out he is the owner and operator of the Mainly Sandwiches who goes by the name “Buddy” .

Buddy was very friendly and very knowledgeable about his food and how he wanted to open a place that was representative himself and his hometown food. He wanted to bring the taste of home to share with Houston because he couldn’t find a place around town to get it just right.. There’s something about someone who knows their food and loves to share that pleasure with other people as well.

Friendly Atmosphere

BLT and Italian
The bread!

He was very adamant about trying his other sandwiches on the menu. Of course this wouldn’t be a problem, if I just didn’t down an entire loaf of bread and large sweet and tender lobster chunks. Luckily, he offered a nice sample of his Italian and BLT sandwiches.  Both of the sandwiches were the right mixture of flavors and textures when it comes to eating a sandwich. Again, the bread shines again, but the levels of flavor made you want to grab a few sandwiches to take home for later.

If you ever wanted a sandwich and want a nice quiet place to sit and eat and have friendly people discuss food from their hometown, then I recommend coming to Mainly Sandwiches.  I also recommend trying a trio of sandwiches, which means bringing multiple friends and stealing off their plates! Everyone wins!

Do you love brunches? I know I do!

Brunches can signify the ending of the weekend before the work week begins. One of the hardest things about brunches, is actually finding a place that has good food at a great price.

Brunch
Good food that makes good people happy!

Thanks to the Houston Press for coming up with a nice inclusive list of places to go eat around Houston.

I never knew Brennan’s of Houston had any type of brunch. Do you have any other favorite brunch spots you would suggest? Now excuse me, it’s time to try out this list.

Try two if you want… It’s ok!

12 Great brunch spots around Houston

As always, remember to try multiple items on the menu. Something familiar and something different. It’s the foodie motto.

Eatfitters Houston – Healthy and Tasty

Healthy

Healthy and tasty usually don’t go hand to hand when it comes to eating delicious food. I had the opportunity to try some new food without sacrificing the taste.  Usually my appetite and healthy don’t go well together. I’ve tried a couple of “healthy” prepared food before and came to conclusion it wasn’t for me at the time. One of the biggest gripes of anyone trying to eat healthy is the aspect of food not tasting good. Usually the salt content is super low. Over the years this has slowly change for the better as salt alternatives come into play in cooking the food.. Its been several years since I had those type of meals, so it was only right that I had a fresh new outlook!

Eatfitters of Houston have several locations around Houston, so it should be pretty easy to find one near your area. They recommend several meal plans that are catered to your taste , eating habits and goals. My weekly plan encompassed a breakfast, snack, lunch and another snack and dinner.

At first glance, the food looks great.  And that’s a positive thing!

Breakfast in the morning

I started with the Breakfast Turkey Hash . This was really good and definitely filling. I seriously thought that it wouldn’t be enough food, but it definitely hit the spot once I finished the meal.

IMG_0482

It was a hard choice and picking which snack that I wanted to eat first. since it was still morning time I decided on the Yogurt Parfait. It was filled with greek yogurt, blueberries, strawberries and topped with granola. The flavor was like having a light dessert. If you gave this to any kid to have for dessert, I am sure they wouldn’t be able to tell if it was something “healthy”. I would have never really consider this a mid morning snack, but if something taste like a dessert and I can eat it in the morning, then its has my blessing!

Now for lunch.

IMG_0466

For lunch I chose to eat the Turkey Bolognese. This is the first I had something healthy and didn’t need any type of seasoning. You can tell it was low sodium, but overall the flavor profile was very balanced. It came with ground turkey meat with carrots over whole wheat noodles. It also came with steamed broccoli.

IMG_0503

The next snack for the day was the cheesecake. Yes. The cheesecake was a snack and not a dessert. Now if there’s any excuse to eat sweets, this would be the best time to make that very case. The cheesecake was very good. It came with sliced strawberries on top with a graham cracker crust.

IMG_0499

Once I left work, I was definitely awaiting dinner for the night. SInce this was my last portion I chose to leave one my favorite dishes of all time for last. Lasagna!!! In this case it was Turkey Spinach lasagna with a side of steamed squashed. I made a great choice! A real good choice which led to me to wish I had a second portion. But we all know that  portion control is very important in beginning a healthy eating lifestyle.

Overall, the food was very acceptable. Very tasty and surprisingly fulfilling. After a long day at work, everyone dreams of having their food already cooked for the day and this food is basically that for people with a busy lifestyle.

Eatfitters can definitely lead you to a good path of eating healthy and catering to you diet goals as well.

Here is their website. They have online ordering or you can go to the store and talk to a nutritionist to get the best diet plan for you.

Harold’s – HRW2015 – Burger love!

Burger

Welcome back fellow foodies!

Harolds

This is one of the three places that was visited by us during HRW2015. It’s located in Heights area right next to the Torchy Tacos of West 19th street.

The restaurant it’s connected to Alli Pizza. You either have to walk up the stairs or take the elevator to get to the top floor where the restaurant is located.

As you walk into the place, the first thing you will notice are the windows that overlook the street. It’s pretty dang nice!! It lets in a lot of light into the whole restaurant from the outside.

This is the last week for Houston Restaurant Week and you must try this place or wait until next year! So…

Let’s start with the FOOD!

Beignets

First on the list was the New Orleans style beignets with café au lait Anglais sauce.

Cheese burger

The Harolds Double cheeseburger with 10.oz freshly ground beef from Finck cattle company, cheddar cheese, bacon jam, with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. It tasted very fresh! Very well cooked as well. If you plan on getting this burger, you definitely should wear dark clothing. And don’t forget to bring a bath towel to wipe your hands with after eating this thing. It’s that juicy!

Cake

And Grandmas cake with coconut cream and topped with whipped cream.

My food

I ordered the Chicken and Sausage Gumbo with Holy trinity, chicken, andouille sausage in a dark roux.

IMG_20150823_132751

And you know I also had to have the burger. Look at this thing! 🙂

Burger

I also had the Grandmas cake for dessert as well.  It honestly reminded me of Tres Leches cake vs. a regular coconut cake.

Overall, the food was huge, filling and came out very quickly. Nothing was undercooked or overseasoned. Just one great food experience. Our waitress may have had a little trouble hearing us in the restaurant. Not saying that the noise levels was too high, just maybe too high for her to hear our orders. So some of our drink orders were mixed up a bit on the first go around.
We really had no real complaints about anything related to food that we order and service, despite that one hiccup.

Parking

Parking is complimentary valet so definitely bring some cash for a tip.

Houston Restaurant Weeks is coming to a close this very week. Even if you don’t make it to this place before the end of the week, it’s still a great place to have some good food and chat with friends. Our next stop will be trusty and always delicious Torchy Tacos next door!

Food travels : Woodlands,Texas

fish

Hello there!

Today’s round of food travels has led us North of Houston in the Woodlands area. We decided to do a staycation and also celebrate her birthday for the weekend. So we chose a nice hotel in the area, that would be only a couple miles of away from the all the planned action. This was a great decision since less driving equals more food and fun everyone!

The Woodlands has everything for all sorts of entertainment, for all sorts of people and families.  Luckily for us this made the decision making on what we wanted to do for the day very simple. We planned ahead and already had the restaurants we wanted to visit on a list before we arrived to the hotel.

The Republic Grille was only 2 miles away, which made for a short trip  and was first on the list of places to visit.

First day!

republic grille

We arrived at the restaurant completely starving! So we couldn’t wait to get to the place and destroy the menu. 🙂

drinks

We needed a good quick drink after the long drive and quickly looked over their drink menu. lol

They were so good. The one of the left was the Texas Tea with Deep Eddy sweet tea Vodka and Lemonade. The one of the right was the Panther Creekrita with Espolon Tequila, Blood orange juice and Ginger ale.

chicken fried chicken

She ordered the Chicken fried chicken. It came in two sizes; small and large. Large is what she ordered and as you can see this thing was a monster of a meal.  She couldn’t decide if she wanted to get the Jalapeno Mac and cheese or Creamed corn or Green beans. She ended up getting the Jalapeno Mac and cheese and Green beans. Buuuuttttttttt…..

creamed corn

…the waitress was so nice(incredibly nice), she decided to bring us the corn for FREE anyways. And it was worth it. It was some of the best Creamed corn I have tasted in a while.

IMG_20150807_210340

I ended up getting the Blackened Flounder with Grilled shrimp and Crawfish sauce with Green beans and Jalapeno Mac and cheese.

After the meal, we went to Market Street to check out the area . We found a couple of bars that we wanted to try. But it was too late and the “itis” was setting in,  so we decided to go to just one place called 1252 Tapas Bar.

Bartenders choice!

The Next Day!

We went to the mall to get a little exercise in, to prepare ourselves for the rest of the large amounts of food we were going to have for the day.

We then proceeded to go to Market street to pay a visit their shops and catch a movie during the day. By the time the movie was over with, we were pretty hungry and we found a nice New Orleans restaurant in walking distance called Schilleci’s New Orleans Kitchen.

The first thing we ordered was the Fried calamari and Fried sausage with remoulade sauce.

calamari

When then moved onto the entrees. I ordered the Blackened Tilapia with Jambalaya and Creole sauce. The sauce was packed with Crawfish and Sauteed peppers, Mushrooms, and Onions. SO GOOD!

fish

She ordered the Pan Seared Tilapia with jambalaya and creole sauce.(not pictured)

So later that same night we arrived back to the Republic Grille. It was that good the first time and again the second, and its right up the street! (convenience wins)

chicken fried steak dinner

This time around I chose the (large) Chicken fried chicken with Creamed corn and Sweet potato medallions.

shrimp and grits

And she chose the Shrimp and Grits (Carolina style). It comes with Stone ground grits, Gulf shrimp, Andouille sausage, Pecan smoked bacon, Chives, and Onions.

chicken fried steak

While eating our meal, the waiter noticed that my large Chicken fried chicken wasn’t “full” size and proceeded to give me a whole new large chicken to make up for the missing space. The wait staff was amazing every single visit to this place. We couldn’t be more satisfied with their customer service.

Final and last day. 🙁

Now it’s Sunday and it’s our last day. Early check-out from the hotel led us to the Hubbell and Hudson kitchen. It was my first time at this restaurant and seem to be a mix of Whole foods and Local foods. It was pack full of different areas to have a meal and/or relax such as a salad bar, coffee bar, and a general grocery store.  But we were there for their breakfast/brunch options. Everyone loves options, right? 😀

salad bar

Their salad bar!

Nice bottles

Steak omelette

She ordered the Steak Omelette with aged Cheddar Cheese, House-Made Pico de Gallo.

hubbell breakfast

I ordered the Texas Breakfast with two free-range Local Eggs, Breakfast sausage, Mini pancakes, Bacon, fire Roasted Salsa and Toast

Lemonade

This meal was complimented with some really good lemonade from their grocery section!

All the places we visited were great. Like seriously, some of the best food I have had in a while. The Woodlands area is full of places to shop, eat and generally enjoy yourself. This is a good place to do any type of “getaway” for yourself or with your significant other or friends or family.

Book a good hotel, find a good movie to watch, make a list of good restaurants, make a list of good places to relax and enjoy the scenery of the Woodlands area.

Seasons 52 – Healthy,tasty and low calories!

oyster

Hello, everyone!

During the summer, Houston Restaurant weeks (really a month) gives us a chance to look at what Houston has to offer. Seasons 52 caught the eye of our friends and we were ready to head up and taste what they had to offer. One thing to note is that Seasons 52 food focuses on taste without being heavy on calories, basically healthy and delicious food. This is definitely a plus for people who want to experience Houston restaurant week , but doesn’t want to ruin their diet for the month.Their menu also includes calories on each food item .This should be a big plus for the calorie watchers!

Seasons 52 is situated in the City Centre area off Interstate 10 and the Beltway and off Westheimer Rd. in the Galleria area of Houston. We chose to go the City Centre area since it is one of our top “We have no idea on what to eat, do or go” type of place. It has everything you could possibly think of to do. Movies? Check! Happy Hour spots? Check! Date spots? Check!

The first thing we ordered was the Lump crab, shrimp, spinach stuff mushrooms, topped with a parmesan panko crust. They were INCREDIBLE. Full of flavor and contained elements on some of our favorite ingredients in a meal. We definitely recommend this appetizer even if you weren’t planning on eating that much!.

oyster

We then noticed their wide variety of flatbread pizzas. We had the Grilled Garlic Pesto Chicken pizza with fresh mozzarella cheese, balsamic onions,
roasted red peppers, arugula. The second pizza was the Salumi Piccante pizza with dry-cured artisan, sausage, roasted Roma tomatoes, fresh
mozzarella and basil pesto. And the third pizza was the Blackened Steak & Blue Cheese pizza with cremini mushrooms, spinach and caramelized
onions .The chicken pesto was the most popular. And yes, we shared the pizza!

Pizza

Salads

I’m not a big fan of salads, but it was part of the meal and they ended up pretty good.

The first salad was a spinach salad with feta cheese, raspberries and pine nuts. ( Mine)
salad

The second salad was a classic grilled chicken caesar with mixed greens and fresh shaved parmesan cheese. (Hers)
caesar salad

Entrees!

First up is the Oak Grilled Beef Filet over sugar snap peas, mushrooms, Yukon mash, red wine sauce. The meal was very light but really tasty. The beef was tender and flavorful.
beef and green beans

She had the Honey Herb Half Roasted Chicken with seasonal vegetable, Yukon gold mash, herb lemon sauce. The chicken was moist and flavorful. And again, it was very light but still filling.
IMG_20140818_213629035_HDR

Desserts

It was about 12 of us, so it was recommended by our server that we get a the mini indulgences tower. It was full of small desserts of strawberry shortcake, peanut butter and chocolate cake, pecan pie, key lime pie, carrot cake and s’mores cake. Every single one of those little desserts were full of flavor that made you want to have 5 of each one.
(sorry for the blurry pic)
dessert

This restaurant is gear towards fine dining while also including multiple diet types like Gluten – Free, Lactose-free, low sodium, vegetarian and vegan. Check out their menus below to get a good overview of what they have to offer.

Everything tasted great. Service wasn’t up to par due to the waitress being fairly new and having a huge table for her the first time. But the food made up for it. This place is a definitely recommended for anyone who loves to eat and also for people who are watching what they eat.
