The Perfect Date Night : Foodie Edition

A good foodie typically has a multitude of food places they would love to visit in their area. Mostly, places that have good prices, customer service, ambience, location and most importantly good food to match. In this case, this is MY version of a perfect date night for foodies. Most people go for reasonably priced food, but I wanted to show the the broad range of places from $$$$ to $. Of course all of these things can be mix-matched and utilized for a lot more than just a date night. A perfect date also means you need the perfect significant other to join you. Hopefully they’re not a picky eater, but if they are, make sure you choose a place with plenty options. Options is the keyword in defining the “perfect” date night.

Now lets get into the best parts!

Movietime!

Going to the movies is the best way to snuggle up with a love one and enjoy a temporary care free life away from the real world for a couple hours. The average movie theater are set up as large theaters made for large crowds, basic food options with people who can be typically in an awkward place sitting next to a complete stranger. As of late, movies theaters have moved towards being the jack-of-all trades of date nights. They’ve are added better food and drink options, better sitting arrangements that are more personal and comfortable and they’ve also have added waiters to serve you directly in your seat, so that you don’t have to walk a single step to get get any of your food and drink items.

Here are a couple of my choices for movie theaters.

Show off!

Comfortable seats!

Ipic theater ($$$$) has some the best qualities for the best movie experience possible. You will have your own two seats that is walled off from other the movie goers. You have blankets if its too cold in the theatre, a small pillow to get extra comfortable and an electronically controlled reclining chair. Their (menu) is full of “Luxury” food options such as a Wagyu Beast burgers, lobster rolls or loaded tater tots. They have a full restaurant and bars outside the theatre to relax and socialize before and/or after the movie. Of course all of these amenities come with a price. But it worth it in my opinion when you just want to have a great time!

But you just want to spend time together… Here’s a cheaper option.

Movies
Comfortable but not so private

If you not into that kind of stuff just yet. Then I definitely recommend going to Studio Movie grill ($$). It’s the same concept but the seating is not as personal and as comfortable. But you can surely get the same customer service experience throughout your movie going experience.

My Favorite part : Food

For the perfect date night, you need to have the perfect steak dinner. Steak is a staple of deliciousness that I like to experience once a week if I could. But my responsibility alarm will go off and will make sure it keeps me in line with what I want to buy. Steaks should barely touched other than the heat of the grill and mild seasoning, a minimum amount of sauces, cooked no further than medium well. After medium-well, it loses its flavor and texture. once you find the sweet spot, the flavor will surprise you!

Keeping showing off!

My pick for food is Capital Grille ($$$$)

But first you have to start off with a great appetizer that compliments the perfect date, that also prepares your palette for the rest of the nights food offerings.

seafood
Nice Appetizer!

I recommend the fried calamari or the lobster and crab cakes!

Next up.The main courses.

Steak is so good!
Yes!!

This is Capital Grille’s encrusted coffee NY strip with shallot butter sauce with sauteed spinach and lobster mac and cheese. $$$$

Going for a little cheaper…

Try Taste of Texas ($$$)

NY Strip steak with garlic butter. 🙂

Just want to spend time with your date?

Try a regular steak night in Houston . I regularly use this (site) to find what I need for steak nights around Houston.  But you have to remember to time your meals with your movietime. I would suggest eating after the movies, because who wants to watch a movie after a huge meal? This also means going a littler early to the movies because most steak nights end early depending on the day.  Pricing, seating and location are all up to you in terms of what you and special need to have a good time.

With all these steaks, you have to have the perfect sides  to enjoy them.

Lobster Mac and Cheese

Lobster Mac and cheese is must. Sauteed spinach with garlic helps with digestion and the perception of eating”healthy”. lol

Not really a meat eater or just don’t feel like eating beef? Go to Pappadeaux’s.

Blackened Catfish

Try Pappadeaux’s ($$) Mississippi Catfish Opelousas (good luck pronouncing that word)  which is blackened catfish with oysters, shrimp, and crabmeat in a delicious lemon garlic butter sauce. This is all served over a delicious dirty rice.

Closing out the perfect date : The Dessert

At this point, you’ve seen a movie, ate really well and probably had a few adult beverages in-between. But you and your date have a sweet tooth.

You’ve may have already visited one steakhouse, but Pappas Bros Steakhouse offers great steaks and also great desserts.

This dessert is a milk chocolate mousse with a toasted marshmallow with dark chocolate ganache, toffee pieces & vanilla-malt sauce.

Ice cream is good too!

If you want something different and customizable then I would chose Creamistry ($$). Creamistry uses liquid nitrogen to create your custom mix of ice cream flavors and choices in a matter of seconds. It’s really cool in terms of presentation and flavor choices.

The perfect date is relative to the people who are enjoying the night out. These are just my recommendations of course. You can use as many permutations of this list as possible that will result in your own “perfect” night.  This can also be a great idea when you may want to pop ” the question” one day !  When you have the right one, you probably have a perfect date on every date anyways!

Until next time my friends!. Don’t forget to visit my Instagram and Facebook page for more food porn!

Stay hungry!

BossCat Libations. The love of food and brunch.

You’re taking your usual stroll through Yelp looking for a new spot to entice your palate. When you’re a foodie, you’ve tried a thousands places before and you need something new. You almost gave up but then you notice a name that makes your eyes light up. It’s Bosscat Kitchen + Libations. From the pictures alone, you just knew you had to try this place out. And that was my story on how I ended up going to them several times in a single month. From brunch to dinner, Bosscat will give you everything that you need to have a great dining experience.

Now lets get into the great food, drinks and the joys of good food.

Fried egg and the rest…

burger
Bosscat Burger

I have a close relationship with fried eggs. If the option is on the menu, I will pay the up-charge to have it. This is where I introduce the Bosscat burger, that’s made with in-house ground beef, bacon, cheese and black garlic sauce. Juicy, large as hell and flavorful are the first thoughts that come to mind. But no burger is complete without the fries. The Bosscat fries takes two days to prepare and the recipe is a secret, but they are delicious nevertheless.

Bosscat Sticky Bun burger
Bosscat Sticky Bun burger

Another burger they serve is strictly for the brunch crowd. The Sticky Bun Breakfast burger is made with a sticky bun with sliced smoked ham,in- house ground beef, cheese, duck fat fried egg and pecans on top. You’re thinking to yourself, why in the world would I get this burger?  Well, on the top of their menu their brunch motto says “…because calories don’t count on Sundays”. It’s one whole breakfast in a neat package.

Canadians love cheese too…

egg pountine
Bosscat Poutine

Poutine is a Canadian staple that has been around for the last 60 years. To be considered a poutine, it must have these three delicious ingredients : cheese curds, french fries and gravy. Everything else is just an extra level of enjoyment. Bosscat has  some really good poutine and it’s shareable, it’s fulling, it’s nap inducing and it’s everything.  The Bosscat Poutine is made with their homemade Bosscat fries, pork belly, Ellsworth Creamery cheese curds, and Andouille sausage gravy. Make sure you grab yourself a nice whiskey or cocktail or both. It doesn’t matter at this point, you will be full and sleepy before the drinks comes to the table after eating this meal anyways.

frog leg
Nashville hot frog legs

Have you ever wanted to go to Nashville and have hot frog legs? You’re in luck! Bosscat has what you need! The Nashville Hot Frog Legs are buttermilk battered frog legs, that’s tossed in a Nashville hot sauce and served on a piece of white bread to soak the juices for you. This was a great appetizer that I refused to share with anyone who asked.

Beef and chicken and potatoes… Am I on a farm?

Beef
Braised Beef short rib

I was lucky the first time I visited Bosscat. The owners were very generous with their time in describing their food on the menu. You can tell that they’ve tasted everything on the menu. This wonderful suggestion by J.T. was one of my favorites. The 12 hour Braised Beef Short Rib that is made with Midwest braised beef short rib, in a black pepper sauce, potato gratin and topped with another fried egg! Sorry for the picture. I was too excited to eat!

For the love of Brunch…

Brunch
Fruity Pebble French Toast

The Fruity Pebble French Toast. The creativity of this meal gives it a 12 on a scale of 1-10.  The bread that was used was perfect. It soaked up the flavors but didn’t get soggy whatsoever. I literally ate half, shared some later, took it home and ate it for breakfast the next day!  Their french toast is infused with condensed milk glaze, chopped bacon, fruity pebbles and fresh berries. Its only on brunch!  🙁 And its very popular. And you might see me there eating it again.

Another favorite of mine…

breakfast brunch
Everything breakfast!

Another candidate for meal of the year goes to the Short Rib Chilaquiles. It’s made with shredded beef short rib, over corn tortillas, cheese, sliced avocado and topped off with a fried egg and sour cream! This was so fulling. You can definitely skip dinner with this combination. It sticks to your bones and doesn’t let go until you wake up again.

Overall, Bosscat has some really good food. The atmosphere is incredible. They have the glass garage doors that open to let sunlight and fresh air in, and you have the vibe of California throughout the restaurant. It makes sense, because there is another Bosscat in Newport, California. The Houston food scene is getting very robust and its getting harder to differentiate yourself from one restaurant to another. But Bosscat had definitely separated themselves from everyone else with their food, atmosphere, drinks and prices. They’ve only been open for a few weeks and they have already made a significant impact to the food scene.

Go check them out!

Do you love brunches? I know I do!

Brunches can signify the ending of the weekend before the work week begins. One of the hardest things about brunches, is actually finding a place that has good food at a great price.

Brunch
Good food that makes good people happy!

Thanks to the Houston Press for coming up with a nice inclusive list of places to go eat around Houston.

I never knew Brennan’s of Houston had any type of brunch. Do you have any other favorite brunch spots you would suggest? Now excuse me, it’s time to try out this list.

Try two if you want… It’s ok!

12 Great brunch spots around Houston

As always, remember to try multiple items on the menu. Something familiar and something different. It’s the foodie motto.

Harold’s – HRW2015 – Burger love!

Burger

Welcome back fellow foodies!

Harolds

This is one of the three places that was visited by us during HRW2015. It’s located in Heights area right next to the Torchy Tacos of West 19th street.

The restaurant it’s connected to Alli Pizza. You either have to walk up the stairs or take the elevator to get to the top floor where the restaurant is located.

As you walk into the place, the first thing you will notice are the windows that overlook the street. It’s pretty dang nice!! It lets in a lot of light into the whole restaurant from the outside.

This is the last week for Houston Restaurant Week and you must try this place or wait until next year! So…

Let’s start with the FOOD!

Beignets

First on the list was the New Orleans style beignets with café au lait Anglais sauce.

Cheese burger

The Harolds Double cheeseburger with 10.oz freshly ground beef from Finck cattle company, cheddar cheese, bacon jam, with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. It tasted very fresh! Very well cooked as well. If you plan on getting this burger, you definitely should wear dark clothing. And don’t forget to bring a bath towel to wipe your hands with after eating this thing. It’s that juicy!

Cake

And Grandmas cake with coconut cream and topped with whipped cream.

My food

I ordered the Chicken and Sausage Gumbo with Holy trinity, chicken, andouille sausage in a dark roux.

IMG_20150823_132751

And you know I also had to have the burger. Look at this thing! 🙂

Burger

I also had the Grandmas cake for dessert as well.  It honestly reminded me of Tres Leches cake vs. a regular coconut cake.

Overall, the food was huge, filling and came out very quickly. Nothing was undercooked or overseasoned. Just one great food experience. Our waitress may have had a little trouble hearing us in the restaurant. Not saying that the noise levels was too high, just maybe too high for her to hear our orders. So some of our drink orders were mixed up a bit on the first go around.
We really had no real complaints about anything related to food that we order and service, despite that one hiccup.

Parking

Parking is complimentary valet so definitely bring some cash for a tip.

Houston Restaurant Weeks is coming to a close this very week. Even if you don’t make it to this place before the end of the week, it’s still a great place to have some good food and chat with friends. Our next stop will be trusty and always delicious Torchy Tacos next door!

Food travels : Woodlands,Texas

fish

Hello there!

Today’s round of food travels has led us North of Houston in the Woodlands area. We decided to do a staycation and also celebrate her birthday for the weekend. So we chose a nice hotel in the area, that would be only a couple miles of away from the all the planned action. This was a great decision since less driving equals more food and fun everyone!

The Woodlands has everything for all sorts of entertainment, for all sorts of people and families.  Luckily for us this made the decision making on what we wanted to do for the day very simple. We planned ahead and already had the restaurants we wanted to visit on a list before we arrived to the hotel.

The Republic Grille was only 2 miles away, which made for a short trip  and was first on the list of places to visit.

First day!

republic grille

We arrived at the restaurant completely starving! So we couldn’t wait to get to the place and destroy the menu. 🙂

drinks

We needed a good quick drink after the long drive and quickly looked over their drink menu. lol

They were so good. The one of the left was the Texas Tea with Deep Eddy sweet tea Vodka and Lemonade. The one of the right was the Panther Creekrita with Espolon Tequila, Blood orange juice and Ginger ale.

chicken fried chicken

She ordered the Chicken fried chicken. It came in two sizes; small and large. Large is what she ordered and as you can see this thing was a monster of a meal.  She couldn’t decide if she wanted to get the Jalapeno Mac and cheese or Creamed corn or Green beans. She ended up getting the Jalapeno Mac and cheese and Green beans. Buuuuttttttttt…..

creamed corn

…the waitress was so nice(incredibly nice), she decided to bring us the corn for FREE anyways. And it was worth it. It was some of the best Creamed corn I have tasted in a while.

IMG_20150807_210340

I ended up getting the Blackened Flounder with Grilled shrimp and Crawfish sauce with Green beans and Jalapeno Mac and cheese.

After the meal, we went to Market Street to check out the area . We found a couple of bars that we wanted to try. But it was too late and the “itis” was setting in,  so we decided to go to just one place called 1252 Tapas Bar.

Bartenders choice!

The Next Day!

We went to the mall to get a little exercise in, to prepare ourselves for the rest of the large amounts of food we were going to have for the day.

We then proceeded to go to Market street to pay a visit their shops and catch a movie during the day. By the time the movie was over with, we were pretty hungry and we found a nice New Orleans restaurant in walking distance called Schilleci’s New Orleans Kitchen.

The first thing we ordered was the Fried calamari and Fried sausage with remoulade sauce.

calamari

When then moved onto the entrees. I ordered the Blackened Tilapia with Jambalaya and Creole sauce. The sauce was packed with Crawfish and Sauteed peppers, Mushrooms, and Onions. SO GOOD!

fish

She ordered the Pan Seared Tilapia with jambalaya and creole sauce.(not pictured)

So later that same night we arrived back to the Republic Grille. It was that good the first time and again the second, and its right up the street! (convenience wins)

chicken fried steak dinner

This time around I chose the (large) Chicken fried chicken with Creamed corn and Sweet potato medallions.

shrimp and grits

And she chose the Shrimp and Grits (Carolina style). It comes with Stone ground grits, Gulf shrimp, Andouille sausage, Pecan smoked bacon, Chives, and Onions.

chicken fried steak

While eating our meal, the waiter noticed that my large Chicken fried chicken wasn’t “full” size and proceeded to give me a whole new large chicken to make up for the missing space. The wait staff was amazing every single visit to this place. We couldn’t be more satisfied with their customer service.

Final and last day. 🙁

Now it’s Sunday and it’s our last day. Early check-out from the hotel led us to the Hubbell and Hudson kitchen. It was my first time at this restaurant and seem to be a mix of Whole foods and Local foods. It was pack full of different areas to have a meal and/or relax such as a salad bar, coffee bar, and a general grocery store.  But we were there for their breakfast/brunch options. Everyone loves options, right? 😀

salad bar

Their salad bar!

Nice bottles

Steak omelette

She ordered the Steak Omelette with aged Cheddar Cheese, House-Made Pico de Gallo.

hubbell breakfast

I ordered the Texas Breakfast with two free-range Local Eggs, Breakfast sausage, Mini pancakes, Bacon, fire Roasted Salsa and Toast

Lemonade

This meal was complimented with some really good lemonade from their grocery section!

All the places we visited were great. Like seriously, some of the best food I have had in a while. The Woodlands area is full of places to shop, eat and generally enjoy yourself. This is a good place to do any type of “getaway” for yourself or with your significant other or friends or family.

Book a good hotel, find a good movie to watch, make a list of good restaurants, make a list of good places to relax and enjoy the scenery of the Woodlands area.

The Chicken and Waffles You Must Try Soon!

Jupiter

When the combination of Chicken and Waffles first came onto the scene, it was considered sort of taboo in the food world. People would say,“Those things definitely don’t go together” or ” Are you crazy!? The grease from fried chicken will make the waffle soggy”. Fast forward to today and it’s a completely different tune! There are several places in the Houston or Texas or in the U.S. that serve some version of Chicken and Waffles. Some places use chicken breasts, some use chicken wings, and some use chicken strips. Depending on your preferences, none of that will matter unless the waffle is tasty and cooked perfectly !  We’ve had waffles from a lot of places around Houston. But the Breakfast Klub is Houston’s go-to spot for Chicken and Waffles. Usually, the wait is little long and you may be outside in the elements for a while waiting on your table. So once our friends decided to meet up at a new place that serves Chicken and Waffles, we couldn’t turn down the offer.

Jupiter Pizza and Waffles is located in Sugarland, Texas, in the Sugarland Town Center. It’s great for brunch or just to eat with friends or family. We arrived on time as usual and had to wait about 30 mins to get a table. Which was understandable due to the large group that was coming to eat and they were also pretty busy that day. We finally sat down and did our usual look over the entire menu and proceeded to pick at least three new things to try to eat/drink.

Chicken and Waffle brunch

We first started with the Mimosas carafe. The orange juice to champagne ratio was perfect, the carafe runs about 32 dollars or 6 dollars per glass. They have other types of Mimosas on the menu as well ranging from 6 to 8 dollars per glass or 24 to 40 dollars per carafe. We were able to get 6 glasses out of one carafe, so it was worth the money. We then decided to try one of their pizzas.

One of the good things with eating with friends is that you can try everybody’s food as well. 🙂  We wanted a really good pizza so we ordered the Angry Rooster, but we also wanted 6 other pizzas from the menu as well lol . The Angry Rooster comes with mozzarella cheese, house-made pulled pork, caramelized onions, fresh jalapenos and yard egg topped with BBQ sauce and cilantro.

Pizza brunch

Our friends order the Meat Hugger, so we “grabbed” a couple of slices from their pan. The Meat Hugger comes with tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, Italian sausage, and pecan smoked bacon. (problem solved from earlier ). It was really good!

more pizza love

We then moved on to the reason why we came to this place. THE CHICKEN and WAFFLES!

I ordered Morning Belle which came with an all-natural crispy fried chicken breast topped with 2 cage-free poached eggs, applewood smoked bacon, and country gravy served over a crisp and fluffy Belgian waffle. The eggs and bacon were perfectly cooked and the waffle was sweet and flavorful.

Chicken is great!

She ordered Southern Belle which came with a crispy fried all natural chicken breast served over a Belgian waffle topped with our homemade maple cream and added a scrambled egg. She also chose the crispy sweet potato fries to compliment her food. The sauce that came with the fries was really good. She ordered another side of the sauce because it went so fast.

waffles!

Overall everything was great! The food and service was exactly what you expect from a good restaurant.

There are so many places to try Chicken and Waffles and this is one of many of them. But all of them are not the same. But you can rest assure that these waffles will hit the spot and you will want to come back. We can also add that it’s also a great area to go shopping or to just walk to burn off those calories you just loaded up on!

If you plan on going anytime soon or later, Sunday’s is the best time to go. Parking should be fine, but take note that you may have to park a little far in the parking garage.

5 Delicious Tacos you will love!

Velvet taco

Hello, fellow Foodies!  We recently found out about a new place to eat in the Heights area of Houston and that means a quick visit by us! This new place serves tacos with ingredients that are supposed to be served on someones’s dinner plate. That new place is called Velvet Taco. It’s situated right off Washington Ave right next to the Jack in the Box. We headed right into the place and the first thing we noticed was that the parking lot was small, but the place was loaded with people. UH OH! Luckily, on our first go around in the parking lot we found a spot.

We quickly walked in and noticed that the place was very spacious and clean. GOOD! The line was long, but it moved at a steady pace. The wait gives you plenty of time to go look over the menu and also spot out where you are going to sit to eat.
Inside

As you can see from the menu, your first question to yourself, “Is how will they pull all of this off? “. It didn’t seem like the kitchen could handle the massive list of tacos on the menu. Once we buckled down on what we wanted to eat, we pseudo-memorized the numbers on the menu, instead of just reading off the titles of the food from the menu. We each got 3 tacos, not knowing if they were going to be huge or small tacos. We also debated if we were going to get any side items. But we ended up just settling on just the tacos to be safe.

velvet menu

Now for the run down!

She ordered a  #10 Texas Burger, #15 Shrimp and Grits and a #12 Slow Roasted brisket.

I ordered a  #15 Shrimp and Grits, #11 Grilled Flank Steak and a #2 Rotisserie chicken.

The titles of the tacos don’t do justice in describing what’s in the tacos, so let me help you out!

Rotisserie Chicken
It came with white queso, roasted corn pico, cilantro, and smoked poblano salsa in a corn tortilla. It had great flavor and was really simple.
I really didn’t taste the rotisserie flavor, but it was still a good taco!

Rotisserie taco

Texas Burger
It came with a real burger pattie, peppered bacon, American cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, and velvet sauce in a flour tortilla.
She like this one because it tasted like a real bacon cheeseburger without the bun. I enjoyed it for the same exact reason.

cheeseburger taco

Grilled Flank Steak
It came with grilled flank steak portobello mushrooms, white queso, grilled red onion, and mex – oregano in a corn tortilla.

Steak flank taco

Shrimp and grits
It came with creole mayo, blackened shrimp, deep fried crispy pepper jack cheese grits, charred tomato poblano creole, and micro cilantro in a corn tortilla.

Shrimp and grits

The Texas Burger and the Flank Steak tacos were our favorites.  We would have preferred all the tacos on flour tortillas versus the corn. We’ll make sure to ask next time we visit.

All the tacos

The drink selection is pretty nice too! You won’t find any Coca-Cola or Pepsi here. It’s simple, but the flavors were tasty!

Soda options

I had the black cherry soda that tasted like carbonated Kool- Aid (that’s a good thing) and she had the real lemon – lemonade.
They also have beers on tap, fresh margaritas and old school sodas.(not pictured).

Great sodas

If you love Torchy’s Tacos, you will definitely love this place! So you should definitely check it out if you have an urge for some good ole tacos.

Come back and tell us how you like it!

Delicious pizza and donuts = An incredible brunch combo!

pizza

Pizza! We all love pizza. So in search of brunch on a Sunday ,we chose one area in Houston we love to visit during the weekends , the Galleria area. Due to the traffic around Houston, its actually preferable since its close to home.  Traffic in Houston can make anyone either really frustrated or really hungry. Luckily on the weekends this isn’t an issue except the hunger part. We chose North Italia for it’s Sunday brunch food variety. It’s located off Post Oak in the BLVD place development around the corner from the Verizon store.
